Dramatherapy

Dramatherapy put simply, is a way for someone to tell and explore their story when words aren't enough.

It's a great way to explore expression, emotions and experiences in a distanced manner.  This form of Arts Psychotherapy allows the individual to explore and express in a manner which allows flexibility with verbal and non-verbal approaches.

As a form of Psychotherapy, Dramatherapy is deeply rooted in psychological and psychotherapeutic frameworks.  Most Dramatherapists will now implement Evidence Based Practice and therapy outcome measures into their practice in order to provide efficacy within the framework.

The wonderful flexibility of Dramatherapy allows for 1:1 therapy and group therapy.  It's appropriate for a wide age range - children, young adults and adults.    Within my own practice I regularly facilitate sessions within schools, private homes, on-line and in dedicated therapy environments.  I have extensive experience of working with therapy students, case managers/legal teams, multi-disciplinary teams, education and individual families.

My interests incorporate Trauma, PTSD, Post-Adoption, Brain Injuries, Adaptive & Augmentative Communication, Sensory Processing Disorders, Sensory Integration, Attachment, Early Years, Selective Mutism, LGBTQ+, Kink Awareness, Identity, BAME, Bereavement and Loss.

I have specific interest and speciality in identity.  This includes post physical/psychological trauma, gender identity, adolescent identity and identity following a brain injury or trauma.

I practice within a Person Centred, Psychodynamic framework, which means you choose what to bring to sessions and the work is led by you.

Person Centred therapy is defined by:

  • Unconditional Positive Regard - accepting and valuing you.

  • Congruence- Honesty and transparency in relation to your work.

  • Empathetic Understanding - Understanding things from your viewpoint.

Following on from this framework, I will incorporate art forms from other disciplines if required and is appropriate.  This may incorporate creative writing, art, play and music.  I have extensive classical music training and so am able to bring music to sessions where appropriate.
